Every time we pick up a book or an essay, or watch a play or movie or TV show or documentary, we are wanting to meet someone new, or to see ourselves. To do this, we first need to know who we are. Many times, students come to me having never truly worked to examine their own values, their own beliefs, and where those beliefs come from. In every class and workshop, I try to address this gap in self-knowing from the start: I ask my students “Why do you say that?” a lot, or “Why do you think you believe that?” I also ask them, regularly, to “Tell me more.” Through qualitative questionnaires and one-on-one conversations, I know my students who go on to apply what they've learned about reading and writing in my classes end up understanding more about how they can contribute to society.
